Good News Translation
When Menelaus saw that he was losing the case, he offered Ptolemy son of Dorymenes a large bribe to persuade the king to decide in his favor.

But Menelaus, already as good as beaten, promised a substantial bribe to Ptolemy son of Dorymenes to win over the king.

When Menelaus realized he was going to be punished, he offered a huge bribe to the king's friend Ptolemy, because he wanted Ptolemy to influence the king to say he was innocent.
