Why is it, Israel, that you find yourself in an enemy land? Why have you grown old in a foreign country? You are ritually unclean, like the dead;

Why is it, O Israel, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies, that you are growing old in a foreign country, that you are defiled with the dead,

You have lived in this enemy land so long that you are now much older. You are unfit to worship the Lord and are unclean, like a dead body.
