Sirach 23:11
Good News Translation
Anyone who takes oaths all the time is sinful to the core, and punishment is never far away from his household. If he fails to fulfill his oath, he is guilty. If he ignores his oath, he is twice as guilty. If his oath was insincere in the first place, he cannot be pardoned and will have a house full of trouble.

New Revised Standard Version
The one who swears many oaths is full of iniquity, and the scourge will not leave his house. If he swears in error, his sin remains on him, and if he disregards it, he sins doubly; if he swears a false oath, he will not be justified, for his house will be filled with calamities.

Contemporary English Version
The wicked make promises with God as their witness, but when a promise is broken, they just explain that it was made by mistake. Or they forget it on purpose, which means that they are twice as guilty. And if they lied in God's name, they will not be forgiven and their family is doomed. *

New American Bible
Those who swear many oaths heap up offenses; and the scourge will never be far from their houses. If they swear in error, guilt is incurred; if they neglect their obligation, the sin is doubly great. If they swear without reason they cannot be declared innocent, for their households will be filled with calamities.

Douay-Rheims Bible
For as a slave daily put to the question, is never without a blue mark: so every one that sweareth, and nameth, shall not be wholly pure from sin.
